MELANTRICH, VÁCLAVES SQUARE
Melantrich multipurpose building is located in the very centre of Prague - at Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí). The building dates back to 1913, when it was built to meet the needs of Melantrich publishing house. For 42 years, the Svobodné slovo newspaper, the Socialist Party magazines of that time, Melantrich and Lidové nakladatelství publishing houses resided in the building.
The building was built in the late Art Nouveau style and was named after Jiří Melantrich of Aventine, an important Czech Renaissance publisher.
The iconic balcony of Melantrich building saw Václav Havel give his first public speech on 21 November 1989. From that balcony, he addressed the 200 000 people who came to demonstrate at Wenceslas Square. Today, the building houses a Marks and Spencer store and, for the most part, apartments for rent.
